Continuing its repertory of dynamic, visual feasts with a dollop of nostalgia, the CM Performing Arts Center in Oakdale will be opening “We Will Rock You” on Saturday, Aug. 7.
The musical, inspired and featuring Queen’s epic songs, is brought to the stage by veteran Long Island theater leaders, director Ronnie Green III and choreographer Kevin Burns.
“This season of shows came together organically,” said theater executive director Alyse Arpino. “The path developed on its own and took us, perhaps, not where we expected, but where we now know we were meant to be.”
“We Will Rock You” is unique in that casting for it did not require strict parameters of appearance or age groups like other musicals; the main criteria was vocal range for specific parts, which lent itself to a unique cast, alike only in enthusiasm for the performance.
“Long Island loves Queen music,” said Arpino. “It has such a following out here.”
The musical, based on a book by Ben Elton, explores a dystopian world where bohemian artists are forced to fight for the reinstitution of free expression.
Songs include, “Radio Ga Ga,” “Somebody to Love,” “Fat Bottomed Girls,” “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” and of course, “We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions.”
